Memorial.\n\nThe city of Oakland, has approved the placement of a Bobby
Hutton's memorial in West Oakland’s DeFremery Park. Bobby Hutton was the
3rd member of the Black Panther Party, and he was struck down three days
after the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and 2 weeks
before his 18th birthday (shot 12 times by the Oakland Police Department
while surrendering, shirtless, after a standoff). Young Bobby Hutton’s
life represents the perpetual awakening of Black youth to their unique
history, and the eternal process of mentorship and guidance towards
political and historical consciousness and a higher calling.\n\nThe Black
Panthers at their height had over 5,000 members and over 40 chapters, so
the process that Bobby Hutton went thorugh was replicated exponentially
across the United States. Equally important in Bobby's story, is that by
stepping forward, 16 year old Bobby Hutton, also avoided the pitfalls of
urban neglect, poverty, violence and drugs that far too many black youth
are mired in today. It is both ironic and tragic, that his life was cut
short by the same senseless violence Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale set out
to eliminate when they formed The Black Panthers. In this regard, Bobby
Hutton is a perfect example of the quintessential Black Panther.\n\nThere
has been a small group of committed family members and friends that have
sustained and championed this project for many years, including Bobby
 Hutton’s sister.\n\nEvent Co-Sponsors: itsabouttimebpp.com, Juxtapoz
(arts magazine), Oakland’s The Commemorator Newspaper (Melvin Dickson),
The Luggage Store Gallery, Club Six, Rigo 23 and Emory Douglas.\n\nTo
