 Union\n415-424-9428\ninfo@voteyesonpropk.com \n\nWhen: Sunday November 3nd,
Noon \nWhere: Polk street between Grove and McAllister\n\n\n\nSan
Francisco, California 11.03.08\nIn 1913 The Red Light Abatement Act was
enacted by the California Progressives, who wanted to get rid of
prostitution. On the night of February 14, 1917, the police threw a circle
of officers around the Barbary Coast. Potential customers were sent away
and the prostitutes were ordered out. Eighty three brothels were closed and
1,073 women were put on the street. The unintended consequence of this was
that prostitution moved into the streets, and thus it became harder to find
and prosecute, and more dangerous for prostitutes.\n\nCritics of this
policy argued that closing the houses would merely spread prostitution
around the city. Just as critics predicted, brothels were dispersed
throughout the city and streetwalkers became a more prominent feature of
the industry. 95 years later, opponents of Proposition K are arguing that
San Francisco should make the same mistakes again. Their misguided attempts
to stop prostitution will cause more harm to the public.\n\nThe District
Attorney Kamala Harris asserts that she can’t arrest anyone for being a
human trafficker if Proposition K passes. In fact she has yet to charge a
single individual for this crime. \n\nPassing Proposition K will actually
free-up important resources to go after these higher priority crimes and
will stop the police department from paying themselves time and half to
make these arrests. Proposition K and free the real sex slaves, victimized
sex workers who currently have no rights! \n\n"Proposition K will improve
worker and public safety by decriminalizing sex-for-hire work, Proposition
K is fundamentally about extending basic human rights to all members of
society regardless of their occupational status. It in no way prevents the
enforcement of laws against human trafficking” said Proposition K
proponent Maxine Doogan. \n\nFind out more about Proposition K and other
important issues facing San Francisco at voteyesonpropk.com\n\nProponents
of Proposition K will also hold a rally at noon on Monday, November 3 at
Noon City Hall. Proponents will to pass out safety devices, condoms of
which are used by law enforcement officials as evidence to make
 prostitution arrests.\n\n
