DESCRIPTION:As climate chaos continues to escalate, Orin Langelle and Anne \nPetermann,
Co-Directors of Global Justice Ecology Project, will \ndiscuss the mounting
global resistance to market-based and \ncorporate-controlled "false
solutions" to climate change. These \n"false solutions" include agrofuels
(large-scale unsustainable \nbiofuels) genetically engineered tree
plantations, carbon trading, \n"clean coal" and nuclear power.\n\nA
specific case study is Nicaragua's Atlantic forest, which is in \njeopardy
from expansion of oil palm plantations for agrofuels. \nNicaragua as a
whole is threatened by increasingly severe storms \nresulting from climate
change.\n\nThey also will speak about the growing worldwide movement for
\ncoordinated global direct action against climate change that will
\ncoincide with the opening of the 2009 UN Climate Convention in
\nCopenhagen, Denmark on the 10th Anniversary of the WTO Shutdown in
\nSeattle.\n\nThere will be a discussion of the topics after the
presentation. \nOrganizing for this mass mobilization against climate
change is just \nbeginning and there are plenty of opportunities to get
involved.\n\nAnne Petermann and Orin Langelle have been attending and
writing \nabout UN Climate Conventions since 2004. They co-founded the
STOP \nGenetically Engineered Trees Campaign in 2004. They helped co-found
\nthe Durban Group for Climate Justice in 2004 and Climate Justice Now!
\nin 2007.\n\nOrin Langelle is also the Media Coordinator for Global Forest
\nCoalition, a worldwide coalition of Indigenous Peoples Organizations
\nand non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from six continents. He \nhas
been an activist since the Vietnam War. Anne Petermann serves as \nthe
North American Focal Point for the Global Forest Coalition and \npresents
at United Nations meetings around the world on the topics of \ngenetically
engineered trees and so-called "second generation" \nbiofuels including
their role in worsening forest destruction, \nviolating the rights of
indigenous peoples and exacerbating climate \nchange.\n\nDonation
requested: $10, but no one turned away.\nBenefit for ICAS/NICCA's
sustainable agriculture and reforestation \nprojects in Nicaragua and for
 the Global Justice Ecology Project.\n\n
