DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special lecture by Dr. Buddhima Lokuge of Doctors
Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), who will speak about
MSF’s work in areas devastated by malnutrition. This ongoing crisis
contributes to 3.5 to 5 million deaths in children under five each year,
leads to long term disability, and results in poor health and educational
outcomes for many more. Dr. Lokuge will speak about malnutrition's impact
on children, their families and communities; of the neglect of the problem
at the national and international level; and of practical strategies to
reverse the crisis in the worst affected areas. At a time of increasing
food prices and food insecurity, Dr. Lokuge will speak of the urgent need
for international action. \n\nBuddhima Lokuge is a medical practitioner
with MSF in New York.  As U.S. manager of the organization's Access to
Essential Medicines Campaign, he coordinates nutrition-related policy and
advocacy for MSF in the U.S. Dr. Lokuge has field experience with MSF in
India and in Afghanistan, where he ran MSF's malnutrition programs in the
district of Ghazni. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is an international
medical humanitarian organization that has responded to nutritional crises
since the 1970s and works to address malnutrition in more than 22 high
burden countries around the world. \nThis event is free, wheelchair
accessible, and open to the public. For more information please visit
http://www.doctorswithoutborders.org. \n\nSponsored by the UC Berkeley
Alliance for Global Health and the Blum Center for Developing Economies.
