 \n(415) 217-9875\n\nMEN’S STORY PROJECT - UCSF PERFORMANCE - 10/15/08,
COLE HALL,\n513 PARNASSUS AVE. SAN FRANCISCO.\n
\nThe Men’s Story Project will be presented on Wednesday, October
15, 2008 at UCSF, in Cole Hall of the Medical Sciences Building, at 513
Parnassus Ave., SF. Doors are at 6:30 PM; performance at 7 PM. In this
performance, a diverse group of 16 men ages 22-60 will present pieces they
have created about their lives, in mediums including slam poetry,
monologues, storytelling and dance. This performance is of interest to
adults of all ages, genders, and sexual orientations; healthcare and social
service providers; students; activists and others. The project was created
by Josie Lehrer, a postdoctoral research fellow at the UCSF Center for AIDS
Prevention Studies. \n\nThe Men's Story Project is a bold new performance
and community discussion project examining social ideas about masculinity,
using the arts as a medium for community-building and social change. It
aims to give voice to men's stories that are less often heard; to break
silences on issues including sexism, racism, heterosexism, homophobia,
ableism and violence – and ways in which these interconnect with social
ideas about masculinity; to celebrate men’s beauty and strength; and to
stimulate discussion on what being a man today can be all about. The
ultimate goal of this replicable project is to help expand the presence of
genuine personal expression, open dialogue, peace, and social justice in
communities. \n\nTopics to be addressed in the upcoming performance
 include: examination of male privilege; platonic love between men;
relationships with fathers and other family members; images of African
American masculinity; disability and sexuality; fatherhood; transgender
identity; bisexuality and internalized homophobia; a young man’s
experiences with Islam, Christianity, homophobia and HIV; body and
wholeness; challenging racism; men's public restroom rituals; a Latino
man’s journey from domestic violence perpetration to anti-violence
activism; a young man’s refusal to continue intergenerational patterns of
violence; prison, spirituality and personal transformation; and gratitude
to lifelong mentors. Presenters are local artists and activists including
Leroy Moore, Jr., Soul Nubian, Galen Peterson, Charles Ekabhumi Ellik and
L.Abdul-Kenyatta, as well as first-time performers. The performance will be
followed by audience discussion. \n\nThe debut show in Berkeley on 8/17/08
was sold out, with standing ovations and strong positive feedback. Audience
comments include: “groundbreaking,” “already historical,” “a
gift,” and “transformative.”\n\nOptional donations at the door will
benefit San Francisco Women Against Rape. The venue is
wheelchair-accessible and has an assisted listening room.\n\nFor more
information, or to schedule an interview with the project creator and
participants, please contact Josie Lehrer at (415) 217-9875 or
