DESCRIPTION:This summer the rooftop at Glide Memorial, a progressive church & nonprofit
located in the Tenderloin district of San Francisco, has been transformed
into an edible, community-produced vegetable garden! Under the project
leadership of Maya Donelson, the rooftop has grown into a demonstration of
local, urban, sustainable, Do-It-Ourselves food production. The rooftop
features soil-less gardening vegetable growers; Earthboxes, a brand of
self-watering container; customized, lightweight garden beds made from
shipping pallets and milk crates; a worm composting system and an
educational mural which ties the whole project together.\n \nThroughout the
summer, community volunteers from throughout the Bay Area and Glide youth
all contributed to create the garden.\n \nCome celebrate the fruits of this
summer's labor with us, take a garden tour, and kick off the National Day
of Action for Green Jobs one day early at our opening reception on Friday,
September 26th from 4:30 to 7:00. The event will take place at Glide
Memorial Church, 330 Ellis St. in San Francisco. Speakers include Project
Organizer Maya Donelson, representatives from Green For All, Bay Localize,
and leaders in the green roof industry. \n\nWe will be accepting donations
for program development and garden maintenance at this event. \n\nThis
project was inspired by the work and support of Bay Localize and made
possible by a Slingshot Grant Award, a joint venture between CLIF Mojo and
Focus the Nation to empower young people to propel creative global warming
solutions into action. Many thanks go to the donations and support of
Architects, Designers and Planners for Social Responsibility, Six Degrees
of Sustainability, the East Bay & San Francisco Permaculture Community,
Hyphae Design Laboratory, Garden for the Environment, Thomas Azwell,
Michael Zuckerman & Temple SF, General Hydroponics, American Soil and
Stone, and all the volunteers who came out to support the build out of this
 garden.\n https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2008/09/16/18538929.php
