DESCRIPTION:Why August 9th?\n\nAugust 9th is the anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing
of Nagasaki, Japan in 1945. The nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki
initially killed about 220,000 people, mostly civilians. The lingering
effects of heat, blast and radiation from these two bombs continues to kill
and harm people today. Sixty-three years after these bombings, with the
United States poised to develop new nuclear weapons, the specter of nuclear
weapons in the hands of "rogue" states has become the number 1 U.S. excuse
for waging war. We invite those who cherish peace and justice to join us in
honoring the victims and survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and giving
voice to their demand: NEVER AGAIN!\n\nWe will gather at the northwest side
of the Lab at 10:30am, and traverse the "nuclear maze", a huge structure
created to teach about the inextricable link between nuclear weapons and
nuclear power and the direct impacts of the nuclear fuel cycle on local
communities. At 11:02am we will gather for a moment of silence followed my
music by Kaylah Marin and our Keynote speaker, Reverend Nobuaki Hanaoka, a
survivor of the U.S. atomic bombing of Nagasaki.\n\nWhy at Livermore
Lab?\n\nLivermore is home to one of the two Labs responsible for designing
and developing every warhead in the U.S. nuclear arsenal. Today, the Lab is
working on modifications to existing warheads and plans to create new,
so-called "Reliable Replacement Warheads." Livermore is the place to demand
that the U.S. lead the world towards nuclear disarmament, not more
Hiroshimas and Nagasakis. United for Peace and Justice has declared August
Nuclear-Free Future Month, dedicated to education, awareness and activism
to stop nuclear madness. \n\nFor more
