 featuring Fausto Roberto Valiente de Leon (Pastoral Commission for Peace 
 and Ecology)\nand Luis Solano (economist and journalist for Inforpress 
 Central America and The Observer) as they discuss community-led opposition 
 to mega-"development" projects in Guatemala.\n\nFausto Valiente will speak 
 about community struggles against open-pit mining in San Marcos. He will 
 describe the devastating affects of mining on rural communities and address 
 the role of international actors and "Free Trade" in facilitating the entry 
 of Northern mining companies in Guatemala.\n\nLuis Solano will discuss 
 local opposition to the Xalalá hydroelectric dam, a highly contentious 
 mega "development" project in Ixcán, Quiche region of Northern Guatemala. 
 The Xalalá dam threatens to displace 30 indigenous communities and damage 
 the region's ecosystem.\n\nNISGUA is a non-profit organization that links 
 people in the United States to the Guatemalan people and their struggles 
 for justice, human rights, environmental protection, and
