DESCRIPTION:Screening of "Bombies": The film, directed by Jack Silberman, is a past
winner of the Golden Gate Award at the San Francisco International Film
Festival and details the U.S. bombing campaign in Laos and the enduring
legacy of unexploded cluster bombs. \n\nBetween 1964 and 1973 the U.S.
conducted a "Secret War" in Laos, dropping over 2 million tons of bombs,
including 260 million cluster bombs. The U.S. carried out 580,000 bombing
missions, equal to one bombing mission every eight minutes around the clock
for nine years, making Laos the most heavily bombed country per capita in
history. Unexploded cluster bombs continue to maim and kill villagers 35
years after the end of war.\n \nPanel Discussion: Following the
screening, a panel will feature first-hand witnesses to the air war and its
aftermath, including a man who took part in the bombing, a journalist who
helped to expose it, and a Laotian who survived. Other panelists include
those advocating for the removal of cluster bombs in Laos and an
international ban on cluster bombs.\n\nThe Schools Not Bombs Campaign is a
special initiative of Legacies of War and Give Children a Choice to help
build schools in impoverished Laotian villages affected by cluster
bombs.\n\nSponsors of the event include Legacies of War, Center for Lao
Studies with Asia Society, Mennonite Central Committee U.S., West Coast
Mennonite Central Committee, and Friends Committee on National
 Legislation.\n https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2008/04/04/18490582.php
