DESCRIPTION:Dozens of Angry Bay Area Seniors, Renters and Community Activists Protest
Outside Apartment Owner Meeting in Oakland. \n\nBlast Apartment Owners for
Trying to Trick Voters Into Abolishing Rent Control Through Prop. 98 \nThe
Landlords' Hidden Agendas Scheme \n\nDozens of seniors, tenants and
community rights activists from Oakland/Bay Area will protest and march
outside the Rental Housing Association of Northern Alameda County (RHA)
convention on Saturday, March 15 at 11:00AM, 4700 Lincoln Ave, Oakland (in
front of Greek Orthodox Church on the sidewalk.) \n\nThe RHA represents
apartment building owners. The organization supports Proposition 98 on the
June 3 statewide ballot. Inside, apartment owners will be scheming to trick
voters into passing the deceptive Proposition 98 which abolishes rent
control and jeopardizes important renter protections. Even though Prop. 98
was written by landlords, for the sole financial benefit of landlords, the
proponents of this measure are trying to trick voters into believing their
initiative is all about eminent domain reform. Opponents of Prop. 98 will
urge voters to read the fine print, warning voters "don't be deceived."
\n\nSpeaking: \nDean Preston, Executive Director of Tenants Together and
Co-Chair of the Coalition to Protect California Renters \nJim Forsyth,
California Alliance for Retired Americans \n\nAlso in attendance: Elected
officials, Just Cause Oakland, Golden State Manufactured Home Owners
League, and other San Francisco tenants organizations \n\nVisuals: Dozens
of renters, elected officials, seniors, mobilehome park tenants and
tenants' rights advocates picketing with signs, banners, in front of RHA
convention. Sherlock Holmes will be roaming the crowd "investigating" the
deceit and deception in Prop. 98. The group will also unveil a giant
magnifying glass - a symbol to voters to "read the fine print" of Prop. 98
so voters are not deceived by the landlords' scheme. \n\nBACKGROUND:
Supporters of Prop. 98 deceptively claim they want to reform eminent
domain, yet the funding trail shows that more than 85% of the campaign
contributions to Yes on 98 came from apartment owner interests and mobile
home park owners who want to end rent control so they can get rich while
seniors, veterans, the disabled and low income Californians will be on the
 losing end.\n https://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2008/03/12/18485265.php
