DESCRIPTION:ACLU of Northern California Action
 Alert\n----------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nThis
week, people all over the world celebrated the coming of a new year, a new
start. At the ACLU, we plan to take an even louder, stronger stand for
civil liberties and human rights this year by showing the Bush
Administration and the world that the time has come to close the detention
center at Guantánamo Bay.\n \nThe ACLU is calling on people of conscience
to wear orange on Friday, January 11th, the sixth anniversary of the
opening of the detention center.\n \nWe invite you to join us at our Close
Guantánamo Volunteer Activist Night on Tuesday, January 8th, to gain a
deeper knowledge about the egregious human rights violations taking place
each day at Guantánamo Bay. \n \nMore Info:
 http://www.aclunc.org/action/events/close_guantanamo_volunteer_activist_night.shtml\n
\nLearn about the day-to-day reality of detainees at Guantánamo, and why
so many people across the country are calling for its immediate closure.\n
\nHear testimonials collected from those present at the detention center -
from prisoners to interrogators to Red Cross personnel.\n \nGain insights
often lost in mass media reporting on Guantánamo: how and why the U.S.
Constitution prohibits holding prisoners without charging them with a
crime, without trial, and without access to attorneys.\n \nBecome an expert
on many of the legal issues surrounding Guantánamo.\n \nEquip yourself
with the tools to educate others about torture and Guantánamo.\n
 \nTUESDAY, JANUARY 8, 2008\n6 - 8 pm\n \nFeaturing:\n \n* Hina Shamsi,
Staff Attorney, American Civil Liberties Union\n* Mona Cadena, Deputy
Director, Amnesty International USA-West\n* Walesa Kanarek, Field
