DESCRIPTION:Mutombo Mpanya: Activism & Social Change Lectures \nThrough A Western Lens:
Representations of the Other\n \nFridays from 7-9pm, FREE and open to the
 public\nNew College of California\nRm 23, 766 Valencia Street, San
Francisco\n \nAlthough we live in a “global village”, most of the
information we receive about the world we live in seems to be a one-way
flow. US media consumers are viewing themselves and cultural others through
the eyes of dominant Western global discourse, which deploys various forms
of representation to make domestic and international others “knowable”.
In this series of workshops we will explore forms of mainstream
representation of different peoples. We will investigate the roles of power
relations, ideology, gender, colonial histories and economics and how they
contribute to the popular understanding of these images. Activities will
include presentations, panel discussions with guest speakers, viewing
images and video clips , and animated group discussions. This series is
sponsored by the Activism & Social Change emphasis area.\n \nNov. 9th:
Images of the Enemy\n \nNov. 16th: Images of the Indigenous Americas\n*
special one hour presentation from 6-7pm, to be followed by John Ross' "Eye
 on Mexico" event from 7-9pm\nNov. 30th: Images of Africa\n \nDec. 7th: From
Cinema to news: Images of American Minorities\n \nDec. 14th: Images of
 Paradise: Polynesia and Tourism\n \n\n
