DESCRIPTION:This symposium aims to highlight the urgent need for the incorporation of
international human rights, labor and environmental norms into California's
social studies curriculum. It is our belief that, in order for our young
adults to be better prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century,
they must have a firm understanding of the institutions and norms that
inform international relations. \n\nToward this end, we have invited
leading figures in the areas of human rights, environmental advocacy,
humanitarian assistance and education to deliver presentations on ways in
which global issues might be included in California's social studies
curricula. \n\nThese speakers include:\n\nRon Herring, Director of the
California International Studies Project\n\nAnne Parrish, Chair of the
Amnesty International Human Rights Educators program\n\nJack Weinstein,
Director of Facing History and Ourselves\n\nJoan Kelly-Williams, Director
of the Bay Area chapter of the American Red Cross\n\nLinda Tubach, Director
of the United Teachers of LA's Collective Bargaining Education
Project\n\nGerald Lieberman, Director of the State Education and
 Environmental Roundtable\n
