DESCRIPTION:Three Americas, Inc.\n\nis proud to present\n\nA Paul Baker Concert and
Talk\n\nOn Thursday, November 1, 7:00pm, at De Anza Clubhouse, Delaware
Ave., Santa Cruz\n\nA Thumbnail sketch of Nicaraguan Paul Baker\n\nPaul
Baker, musician, who has a history of activism for peace and justice, will
be touring California with his homemade guitar, singing songs of Chilean
hero, Victor Jara, as well as his own compositions and talking about
present day Nicaragua under the Sandinista President, Ortega. Paul lives
with his wife Fatima in an extended family household of 13 people while
they both do work which helps the people who live in their barrio, La
Primavera, one of the poorest in Managua, to have more fulfilling lives.
The U.S concerts will help to fund this work, as well as help his family
survive. In his own words, Paul says he will speak about:\n\na) informing
people about the overall positive situation in Nicaragua and the Americas:
talking in particular about Hambre Cero program in the context of ALBA (and
of the fierce anger that the program is generating because of its gender
balancing, ecological and community-building dimensions, all of which
challenge the crumbling but still dominant neo-liberalist ideology/praxis
). This is particularly vital because Nicaragua can offer such good
examples for taking on global warming;\n\nb) raising money for Echoes of
Silence projects within all that, especially work with Hambre Cero, the
development of our Water Not War campaign, the re-painting the best murals
of the revolution wiped out by Aleman, and Cafe Sandino;\n\nc) Family
survival (we currently have a family of 13:\n\n5 adults, none of whom are
able to find paid work beyond occasional temporary jobs that offer a
pittance (C$700 per month is an average 'wage'), when they have anything at
all; 5 teenagers - all in local schools by the skin of their teeth; 4 litte
guys from Joel (just turning 9 to Cristina Fabiana, just turned 1. With
Nicaraguan prices sometimes being higher than the equivalent commodity in
the US, we rip through US$1500 per month easily.\n\nNote: If people wish
to take up a special collection for Hurricane Felix victims, he will not
object, but “Shakira, the wee Colombian singer, just donated
 US$40,000,000(!). What a gal! I bet she's more than matched US/European
 governmental support, all by herself).”\n
