DESCRIPTION:Please forward widely\n\nThe Heads Up Collective presents\n\nTelevising the
Revolution\na Radical Film Series at\nEl Rio, 3158 Mission St. @ Cesar
Chavez, San Francisco\n\nA benefit for The Intertribal Friendship
 House\n\nTuesday, October 23rd, 8:00 pm\n\nShowing the films:\n\nSa'ah and
Alcatraz is Not an Island\n\nPlus!! Special guests:\n\nJames Fortier,
director of Alcatraz is Not an Island\nTony Gonzalez, west coast
representative of AIM\nAnd other honored Alcatraz Veterans to be in
attendance and speak\nabout the occupation and the upcoming longest walk
 2.\n\n\nSa'ah (Sarah Del Seronde, 2005, 20 mins,)\nChange is imminent
within all cultures and nothing shows this more\nclearly than with the
growing youth of indigenous peoples. And to meet\nthe ongoing ebb and flow
of life, the Diné must retain lingual and\ncultural teachings to ensure
their path to Sa'ah Nagháí Bik'eh Hózhóón\n(Walking in Beauty into Old
Age). In essence, this is the fundamental\npursuit of all Diné: to live a
long life. This short documentary was\ninitially thought to provide a
glimpse of a remarkable young Diné\nman's life on the reservation. When
the idea falls through, a Diné\nfilm student goes to a medicine man for
help. This documentary\nentitled Over There follows a one-day trip through
the Navajo Nation\nReservation and shares what happens on one such journey.
This reveals\nechoes from the medicine man that narrate the meaning of the
Diné\nphilosophy and reminds us to ask ourselves what we are teaching
our\nchildren.\n\n\nAlcatraz is Not an Island Dir: James Fortier 57 min.
Color 2002\nFor Native Americans all across the United States, the
infamous\nAlcatraz is not an island... It is an inspiration. After
generations\nof oppression, assimilation, and near-genocide, a small group
of\nNative American students and "Urban Indians" began the
19-month\noccupation of Alcatraz Island in November 1969. They were
eventually\njoined by thousands of Native Americans, retaking "Indian land"
for\nthe first time since the 1880s. This remarkable
documentary\ninterweaves archival footage and contemporary commentary to
examine\nhow this historic event altered U.S. Government Indian policy
and\nprograms, and how it forever changed the way Native Americans
viewed\nthemselves, their culture, and their sovereign rights.\n\nThe
Intertribal Friendship House (IFH)started out as a place for
American\nIndians from all over the country to meet and see one another
after they\nwere relocated to the Bay Area during the 1940's through the
1960's as a\nway of having American Indians leave the reservation and
assimilate. This\neffort by the United States government did not work. Over
the last 50\nyears,\nIntertribal Friendship House has continued to provide
services to the\nNative population in the Bay Area. IFH continues to be a
place where "all\nNatives are welcome," whether it's as a place to: sit and
have a cup of\ncoffee to find out about the latest community events, attend
a celebration\nor funeral, to have ceremonies, or to take classes. IFH's
community hopes\nthat the space will continue to be open for future
generations to learn\nabout their traditions.\n\nPart of an ongoing monthly
series showcasing radical films and supporting\nlocal organizing. Films are
shown on the patio at El Rio every month.\n\nEvent is free, but donations
accepted. Space is wheelchair accessible, but\nbathrooms are not. 21 and
over. For more information, please contact\nradfilms@lycos.com\n\nSave the
Date! Check out our next revolutionary feature on Tues, November\n27th to
 benefit POWER!\n\n
