DESCRIPTION:County considers road-widening project in Samuel P. Taylor State Park\n\nA
narrow and winding stretch of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard through Samuel P.
Taylor State Park is in line for an estimated $5.4 million in
repairs.\n\n"It's an old concrete road," said Dave Bernardi, a county
engineer. In coming up with plans to fix the 5.4 miles of road, the county
has also been looking into the possibility of providing bicycle lanes in
each direction and a process for filtering runoff before it reaches
Alginates Creek, he said.\n\nBecause long stretches of the road hug the
creek and are lined by old redwoods, widening the roadbed to accommodate
two bikes lanes is not a simple task.\n\n"We're hoping for 4 feet on both
sides," Bernard said. "That's clearly one of the challenges we are going to
look at." The county's policy is to add bicycle lanes as part of major road
repairs.\n\nThe project would stretch from Shafter Bridge to Platform
Bridge Road.\n\nAbout 1,500 cars per day - similar in traffic levels to
Miller Creek Road in Marinwood or Point San Pedro Road in San Rafael -
travel that stretch of Sir Francis Drake\n\nBoulevard, Bernardi
said.\n\nMoney for the repairs and improvements will come from Measure A,
the transportation sales tax approved by local voters in 2004.\nadd put up
