Day\n\n\nFriends of the Urban Forest is partnering with Rainbow Grocery to
participate in PARKing Day on Friday September 21st. PARKing Day is an
event conceived by San Francisco based art collective REBAR, to promote
prioritizing use of public space for people instead of cars by turning
parking spaces into parks. This year FUF's installation will be on Folsom
Street near 13th, on the side of Rainbow Grocery. We are modeling our space
on a community garden and will have plants to give away courtesy of
Rainbow. We invite you to come and enjoy your lunch hour, coffee break or
day off with at one of the many PARK(ing) parks and experience the
rejuvenating effect green space can have on your day and help us promote
more a more green San Francisco. For the location of a PARK(ing) park near

your energy saving lighting from Lights Out San Francisco and Esurance for
October 20 at www.lightsoutsf.org.\n\nLights Out San Francisco is a
citywide energy conservation event on Oct. 20, 2007. On this night, we
invite the entire city of San Francisco to install one compact fluorescent
light bulb (CFL) and turn off all non-essential lighting for one hour. Our
city's growing appetite for energy must be controlled to protect our planet
from the effects of the climate crisis.\n\nWe estimate that turning lights
out in San Francisco for even one hour could save as much as 15 percent of
the energy consumed on an average Saturday night. When Sydney, Australia
hosted the first "Lights Out," energy conserved was equivalent to taking
48,613 cars off the road. In London, England, "Lights Out" saved energy
equal to running 3,000 TVs for a year!\n\nBack to top\n\n\n3. Mei Ling is
moving on to the DOE\n\nWe are sad to lose our planting manager Mei Ling
Hui at the end of the month. But although she is leaving the house, she's
still a member of the family! Mei Ling goes to work for the Department of
the Environment, working with the Urban Forest Council and our elected
officials to promote trees and urban forestry throughout San Francisco. Mei
Ling has been with FUF for just over three years, starting out as an intern
while she took Horticulture classes at City College and got her B.A. in
Culture, Ecology and Sustainability from New College. We wish her luck at
the new job and look forward to working with her in a new way.\n\nBack to
top\n\n\n4. Volunteer Appreciation BBQ\n\nPlease join Friends of the Urban
Forest for the annual Volunteer Appreciation Barbecue Saturday, October
20th, from 11am to 2pm. Featuring food, activities and fun, this is our
chance to say thank you for all of the hard work everyone put in greening
San Francisco. Come and share the afternoon with the FUF volunteer
community and meet others who spend their free time making our community
better for everyone. This year will feature volunteer awards and
educational activities to expand you tree knowledge. Keep you eyes open for
updates about the event. Please contact Reed Milnes for further information
or if you have questions. Hope to see you there.\n\nBack to top\n\n\n5. FUF
