DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nIn our on-going efforts to turn the tide of the downtown police
state,\nGuerilla Drive-In is helping with an innovative protest in support
of\nhomeless rights.  The culmination of six weeks of organizing for
a\nfederal lawsuit against the Sleeping Ban will feature a Know
Your\nRights training on the Sidewalk in front of Bookshop Santa
Cruz,\nfollowed by songs, stories, and celebrity speakers at City Hall,
 food\nand a Guerilla Drive-In showing.  All followed by a sleep-in and a
game\nof "Meet the Mayor" on Monday morning.  Come on
 down!\n\n\n\nSanta\nCruz Guerilla Drive-In and HUFF Present\n\n\nSir!  No
Sir!\n\n \nFilmmaker and activist David Zeiger's documentary chronicles
the\nlargely forgotten anti-war activities of American GIs and other
members\nof the military during the Vietnam era. Powerful and surprising,
this\nlook back at a little-investigated chapter of history weaves
together\nthe stories of veterans who participated in the opposition
movement, an\neffort that, by the early 1970s, found widespread support
 from\ncivilians and troops alike.\n\n\nSunday\nAug 12th, 8pm\n\nSanta Cruz
City Hall,\n809 Center Street\n(across from\nthe main branch of the
 library)\nAlways Free!\n\n\n\nPLUS an\nintermission, challenging ideas of
public space, an\nenchanting downtown location, and great company.\n\nBRING
blankets, sleeping bags, pillows, friends, food\n\n& drink to share.
\n\nMORE INFO AND A\nRANT:  Like something out of the\nmost dystopian GDI
sci-fi feature, the message is loud and clear, if\nyou are not part of the
system, you are a criminal.  In this sleepy little liberal\ntown, sleeping
outside is a crime.  Anyone who falls off of\nthe treadmill of earn-and
spend (by accident or choice) -- anyone who\ncan't afford five, six, seven
hundred dollar rents in Santa Cruz --\nmight well find themselves in
jail.  Beyond just an issue of boring old\npoverty (yes, we should do
something about that, shouldn't we?), there\nis a fundamental issue at
stake: the basic freedom to exist on this\nplanet without taking part in
it's destruction.  \n\nAfter six weeks of tabling, picketing, and partying
outside Vice-Mayor\nRyan Coonerty's Bookshop Santa Cruz, Coonerty remains
mum on the basic\nissue: The judicially-established fact that nighttime
sleeping bans\nviolate the federal and state Constitutional prohibitions
against cruel\nand unusual punishment.\n\n\nMore than 16 months ago, such a
ban was overturned in Los Angeles in\nSkid Row. A year ago, Richmond
changed its law to comport with this\nruling (the Jones decision). This
spring San Diego settled with its\nhomeless community, agreeing not to
enforce laws against sleeping and\ncamping at night.\n\nCome down and sleep
out with the homeless to help end the Sleeping\nBan.  Housed supporters
will be setting up tents and shelters for\nhomeless people on the "Mayor's
front lawn" to urge Mayor Reilly to\nabide by the Jones decision and stop
ticketing homeless people for\nsleeping and covering up with blankets at
 night.

GUERILLA DRIVE-IN is an outdoor movie theater under\nthe stars that springs
up unexpectedly in the fields and industrial\nwastelands. Beyond showing
great movies and bringing a broad community\ntogether, part of our mission
is helping reclaim public space and\ntransforming our urban environment
into the joyful playground it should\nbe.\n\n\nHUFF SANTA CRUZ is Santa
Cruz's oldest and most stubbornly\npersistent grassroots homeless advocacy
group. We make trouble for the\npowers that be and fight institutional
human rights abuses such as the\n"blanket ban": a Santa Cruz City Council
law prohibiting homeless\nmothers and children from covering up with a
 blanket between the hours\nof 11 p.m. and 8:30 a.m.\n\nURBAN WASTELAND
