\n\nTiburon's 'borrowed' views to be defined 04/10/2007 12:49:04 AM

architect Jim Malott, a former Design Review Board member who wrote the
town's hillside design guidelines - a 30-page document providing design
review guidance of site plan and architectural review applications - said
the proposal would formalize what the town has been doing all along.\n"The
term 'borrowed views' was not used in the guideline, but we've been using
it," he said, noting he tries to consider all parties involved in many of
his designs. "The implication is to try to preserve existing views as much
as possible from structures that exist, even though they may exist over
other people's properties. It's always been there but it's kind of been
latent."\nMalott said borrowed views are a frequent topic of discussion
when he represents a client before the town's Design Review Board.\nHe said
his goal in every such hearing is "a balance of the change\nArchitect Jim

one is building on a property, versus the right of the property owner to
build on his property and do a good job of building so it affects as little
as possible."\nOne such design was for the project next door to Lawrence on
Mar West Street. Malott said his concept for the sloping lot, approved last
year, would place half the volume of the house below ground in
consideration of the five houses looking over the property at different
directions and different heights.\n\nArchitectural correctness? -
