DESCRIPTION:Join us for the opening reception of "Coming Home: Prints by Juan R.
Fuentes."\n\nThe exhibit “Coming Home” signifies a homecoming of sorts
for master printmaker Juan R. Fuentes, who grew up in Watsonville, before
moving to the Bay Area and becoming an internationally recognized
artist.\n\nThe show’s gorgeous prints – featuring women of color &
laborers – stand as the first solo exhibit by Mr. Fuentes in Santa Cruz
County. \n\nThe exhibit runs through August 26.\n\nMr. Fuentes is currently
the director of Misión Gráfica at the Mission Cultural Center for the
Latino Arts in San Francisco. He helped define the Chicano Poster Movement
in the 1970s, creating strikingly powerful posters documenting
political/social concerns in California and calling for action on
international issues, such as the wars in Nicaragua and El Salvador.
\n\nHis work can be found in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian
and the San Francisco Mexican Museum.\n\nIn 2006 he co-curated the exhibit
“Chicano Encounters,” a historical survey of Chicano Political Art that
exhibited alongside Cheech Marin’s “Chicano Visions” at San
Francisco’s de Young Muesum. Mr. Fuentes also held an artist-in-residence
position at the de Young’s Kimball Gallery during that time. \n\n\n
