special note of the album’s centerpiece song, “Thirteen Below.” A
gem written by Furtado, it recounts the January 2006 Sago mine disaster,
which trapped 13 men, only one of whom survived. “I’ve heard so many
mining songs in my folk history, and I’ve sung so many topical songs in
the past, that writing and singing it felt natural to me,” Furtado notes.
By giving the song the textures, cadence and language of Appalachian
traditional music, the artist places the Sago disaster in its proper
historical context while also giving it the universal resonance of tragedy.
  Listen to the song here:
 http://www.funzalorecords.com/mailin/mp3/TFthirteen.mp3.zip.\n\nFurtado
recently told the Knoxville Daily Times that while writing the songs on
Thirteen he was inspired by reading literature, history, poems and the
account of the Sago mine disaster that claimed 12 miners in West Virginia
in early 2006.\n\n"When my manager asked me if I had any mining songs, I
remembered the Sago disaster and how that really struck me," he said.
"That's where the title track comes from — it's a whole interesting look
on the number 13 and whether it's lucky or unlucky, and being that the
story impacted me and it's a topical thing, it really wrote itself. That
goes back to what I was listening to at the time, and how you can look at
it from more of an abstract than simply telling folks the
story."\n\nTony’s tour dates are listed immediately below. Stay tuned to

“Thirteen Below”, has drama to spare—written about the Sago mining
disaster, it’s got a lot of old-soul folky doom and a thrillingly
disturbing way with some huge power chords.” -- POPMATTERS.com\n\n“A
 collection of effortless-sounding, twangy pop-rock, it’s a confident and
likable album that features stellar musicianship and well-crafted songs
that cover topics from the personal to the political.” -- PORTLAND
TRIBUNE\n\n“No getting stuck in a rut for this guy. Established as a
blushgrass banjo picker in the 80s, the ever-evolving Tony Furtado has

proving himself a skillful guitarists and, as of just a few albums ago, a
singer-songwriter of some expertise.” -- HARP \n“He mixes bluegrass
