DESCRIPTION:Maria Luisa Mendonça is co-director of the Social Network for Justice and 
 Human Rights (Rede Social de Justiça e Direitos Humanos) in Brazil and 
 edits its annual report on human rights.  She was one of the founders of 
 the World Social Forum and is currently a member of its Organizing 
 Committee.  Mendonça also participates in the Land Research Action Network 
 and the Global Campaign for Agrarian Reform, and also works as a journalist 
 and filmmaker.  Mendonça will speak on the polemical context of ethanol 
 production in Brazil and show her latest film, Sugar Slaves, a 25-minute 
 documentary about the violations of basic rights of sugarcane workers and 
 the environmental impacts of extensive sugarcane monoculture. \n\n“A
