DESCRIPTION:The United States, Iraq and Iran: Prospects for Peace and
Security\n\n\nWhile the dangers from terrorism, religious extremism and
nuclear proliferation are very real, U.S. policy in the Middle East has
only made these threats worse. As the threat of a new war with Iran is
added to the horror of the fifth year of war in Iraq, we need a better
understanding of what constitutes real security and what can be done to
make it possible.\n\nCome hear Professor Stephen Zunes talk about the U.S.
governments’ military excursions in the Middle East and its intentions
regarding Iran. Dr. Zunes is a Professor of Politics at the University of
San Francisco. He serves as Middle East editor for the Foreign Policy in
Focus Project, an associate editor of Peace Review and as chair of the
academic council of the Institute for Nonviolent Conflict. He authored the
highly-acclaimed Tinderbox: U.S. Middle East Policy and the Roots of
Terrorism. In 2002, he won recognition from the Peace and Justice Studies
Association as Peace Scholar of the Year. Dr. Zunes is the author of
scores of articles on Middle Eastern politics, U.S. foreign policy,
international terrorism, social movements, and human rights. \n\nWILPF
meeting: June 19, 2007, 7:00 pm at the Friends’ Meeting House, 225 Rooney
Street (off the Morrissey exit), Santa Cruz. Free.\n\n\n\n\n
