DESCRIPTION:This is a progressive 8 hour workshop for all in the community! Holistic
 Disaster Preparation: \nHerbs & First Aid For A Community-Based
Response\n\nThis Workshop will discuss the basics of an organized
alternative response & will give you skills you can use in your daily life
to create the world you want to live in!\n\nFriday, May 25, 7-9 PM &
Saturday May 26, 9AM -4PM\n\nHurricane Katrina revealed massive
deficiencies in the government’s ability to respond to natural disasters.
But the seeds of the disaster in the Gulf Coast were sowed by decades of
racist and oppressive social neglect that left levees, public health,
education and housing systems in shambles. The real disaster in New Orleans
is occurring now almost two years after Katrina has passed. Displaced
residents daily battle the governments and disaster capitalists for the
right to return to their city. Neighborhoods are still struggling against
gentrification and big industries to get affordable housing, functioning
school and health care systems as well as access to adequate food. Is the
Bay Area’s social infrastructure any stronger than what existed in New
Orleans before the storm? What weaknesses in our system would a natural
disaster expose? Are we prepared to respond to the next major disaster in
the Bay Area?\nThis training is for people wanting to support communities
working for self-determination before, and after disasters of any kind. We
offer individuals basic first aid skills useful for surviving natural
disasters. We emphasize herbal medicine as an accessible, and effective
form of health care. Instructors will draw upon our experiences as health
care advocates & practitioners, street medics, & volunteers at Common
Ground Health Clinic in New Orleans.\n\nAs climate change brings on
unprecedented natural disasters will the Bay Area reach out to those
communities it has historically neglected? . Can we stand in solidarity
with threatened communities now so that when disaster hits no one will be
left to starve on their rooftops?\n\nPrepare & Respond to Emergency
Situations.\n\n• Learn About Basic First Aid Skills Using Wilderness
Medicine & Western Herbalism.\n• Get to Know Locally Grown Herbs to Add
to Your Emergency First Aid Kit.\n• Herbal Treatments for Injuries,
Ailments, & Stress\n• Grow Herbs In Urban Areas.\n• Learn about
 Aftercare & Health & Safety Tips.\n• Long-term Strategies & Resources
for Community Self-Reliance.\nIt is possible for individuals to acquire
life skills needed to survive natural disasters, and to live healthier
lives in general. What the government refuses to do, we can. We all need to
come alive and recognize our collective healing potential; the need is
urgent.\n\nThe skills and knowledge from this 8 hour work shop are meant to
empower and inspire us to organize throughout our communities. Instructors
will draw upon our experiences as health care advocates & practitioners,
street medics, & volunteers at Common Ground Health Clinic in New
Orleans.\n\n $70.00 sliding scale; no one turned away. (Proceeds will go to
the Ohlone Center of Herbal Studies) RSVP. \n dixieb@riseup.net\n\n
