DESCRIPTION:Hundreds in a coalition of contracted-out workers, students, professors, 
 local elected officials, UC union members, and community members will take 
 part in a major, dramatic action on May 1st to protest the University’s 
 continued contracting out of food service workers, who are forced to endure 
 disrespectful treatment, a lack of health care, and poverty wages.\n\nAt 
 every UC campus and Medical Center administrators have found that direct UC 
 employment is, like the UCSC administration stated, in “Closer alignment 
 with the values and mission of the university and with the expectations of 
 students.”  Even at the UCD Medical Center in Sacramento, food service 
 workers are directly employed by the University and receive dollars on the 
 hour more, union representation and pay 95% less for health care.  
 \n\nWorkers and their supporters made their demand public on March 1st, and 
 since then UC Davis has continued to deny food service workers the 
 opportunity to fully participate in the campus community through direct 
 employment.  This come despite the fact that:\n\n·  The ASUCD (student 
 government) has overwhelmingly passed a resolution in support of workers’ 
 demand\n\n·   Local elected officials have been writing letters to the UCD 
 administration in support of workers’ demand\n\n·   A growing number of 
 UC Davis faculty members have been signing a letter in support of 
 workers’ demand\n\n·   Workers and their supporters have been informing 
 the campus community for nearly two months about the issue\n\nUnless UC 
 Davis decides to join the rest of the UC system by agreeing to directly 
 hire food service workers, workers and their supporters will be forced to 
 take this drastic step on May 1st.\n\n\n
