DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Reel Work Labor Film Festival, \nApril 25 - May 11. Full
schedule at www.reelwork.org\n\nand by the “Better World is Possible”
film series \n\nAdmission by voluntary donation\n\nAgainst the backdrop of
deteriorating and absent healthcare in even the richest countries, ¡Salud!
tells the story of a cash-strapped country with one of the best healthcare
systems in the world -- Cuba! \n\n¡Salud! provides a rare glimpse into
the Latin American Medical School in Havana where 12,000 low income
students from 27 countries, including nearly 100 from the US, receive a
free medical education.\n\n This uplifting film opens in South Africa
showing Cuban doctors working there. In Honduras where the IMF has
mandated healthcare budget cuts, Cuban doctors serve indigenous
communities. In contrast, in Gambia we see government taking the lead to
bring health care to all, with the help of Cuban doctors. In Venezuela we
go into barrios on the hillsides of Caracas and into river settlements in
the Amazon, where a Cuban doctor is often the only doctor these communities
have ever seen. \n\nThis film challenges us to reflect on the larger
questions: Do governments have a responsibility to serve their citizens?
In today’s world, with so many diseases preventable, shouldn’t every
person have the right to basic healthcare? \n\n We can learn a lot from our
neighbor to the south! \nBring your questions! Our speaker, Dawn Gable,
has lived and worked in Cuba and seen the Healthcare System first-hand.
She is well qualified to expand on the film, and answer your questions.
Cuba equals or surpasses the US on various measurements of health, and
nearly 30,000 Cuban doctors already serve in 68 other
countries!\n\n¡Salud! , 93 minutes, is directed by Academy Award nominee
Connie Field. For extensive and in-depth articles on US Health Issues,
Global Health Issues, Cuban Health System, and the Latin American Medical
School in Havana, including how to apply, go to www.saludthefilm.net \n\n
