DESCRIPTION:Robert Atkins\n\nMonday, April 30, 2007\nLecture Hall,
7:30pm\n\n“Censoring Culture: Contemporary Threats to Free
Expression"\n\nConcerns about censorship in the arts may seem historic, but
they haven’t gone away. Today, censorship is just as likely to be the
result of market force or bandwidth monopoly as a line edit or the removal
of an artwork from an exhibition. New technologies and economic systems
have less visible, yet equally insidious implications in their impact upon
creative work. In the recently published anthology, Censoring Culture:
Contemporary Threats to Free Expression, Atkins, and Svetlana Mintcheva,
the head of the National Coalition Against Censorship’s art program, have
compiled a range of material that report on the current media climate; in
this talk, Atkins will relay the findings. Atkins is the founder of the
online journal TalkBack! A Forum for Critical Discourse. An anthology of
his writing, Seismic Shift: The Collision of the Art World and the Real
World In the Late Twentieth-Century, is forthcoming as is a current group
project, Thanks for Sharing! A Resource Book About Collaboration in the
 Arts & Beyond. www.robertatkins.net\n\n
