DESCRIPTION:Volunteers Sought for Earth Day Weekend\n\nJoin the Big River Stewards
program of the Mendocino Land Trust and the Mendocino Woodland Camp
Association for a work weekend at Big River and the Mendocino
Woodlands.\n\nCome stay a night at the historic Mendocino Woodlands Camp in
the redwoods and help with restoration projects at Big River. Complimentary
lodging will be provided to volunteers in rustic private cabins at the
Mendocino Woodlands Camp, a National Historic Landmark built by the
Civilian Conservation Corps during theGreat Depression.\nCheck-in is
Saturday, April 21st from 9:30 am-11am at the Mendocino Woodlands Camp
One.\nOn the Saturday workday (11am-4pm) we’ll hike up to “Big Tree,”
a remnant old-growth redwood tree, and work our way down the ridge to the
river, restoring failed water bars and improving road drainage to reduce
erosion as we go.\nOver 80 miles of old logging roads remain on Big River
since the Mendocino Land Trust organized the acquisition of the 7,334-acre
former industrial logging property and turned it over to California State
Parks. Many roads are actively eroding and contributing sediment to Big
River, home to endangered Coho Salmon and threatened Steelhead Trout. Big
River is listed as sediment-impaired by the US Environmental Protection
Agency.\nOn Saturday night, a complimentary dinner will be served in the
historic Camp One dining hall. A presentation by renowned nature
photographer Taylor Lockwood entitled, "Chasing the Rain: My treasure hunt
for the world’s most beautiful\nmushrooms" will follow.\nOn Sunday, April
22nd, after a complimentary breakfast and check-out, volunteers will head
to Big River Beach to remove non-native and invasive plants from this
scenic beach located between the Big River estuary and the historic village
of\nMendocino.\nThis project is funded in part by a grant by the California
State Parks Foundation. For more information, or to RSVP, contact Big River
Stewards Coordinator Matt Coleman at\n707-962-0470 or e-mail
 mcoleman@mendocinolandtrust.org. Lodging is limited to 25 participants.\n
