DESCRIPTION:International Rivers Network invites you to a lecture by Ali Askouri,
Sudanese human rights activist.\n \nMr. Askouri, originally from a
community that would be affected by the Merowe Dam (also known as the
Hamadab Dam), currently lives in exile in London. Formerly a senior officer
for the Central Ministry of Planning in Sudan, he is currently the
President of the Leadership Office of Hamadab Affected People. He
coordinates the struggle to protect the rights of people threatened by the
Merowe Dam.\n \nThe Merowe Dam will displace more than 50,000 people from
the Nile Valley to the Nubian Desert. In addition to its serious livelihood
impacts, the project will tear apart communities, increase diseases, and
have far-reaching environmental impacts. The 174-km-long reservoir will
inundate an area of Sudan rich in history dating back 5,000 years.\n
\nDissent has been met with violent repression, yet the affected people
continue the struggle to have their voices heard.\n \nInternational Rivers
Network protects rivers and defends the rights of communities that depend
on them. IRN opposes destructive dams and the development model they
advance, and encourages better ways of meeting people's needs for water,
energy and protection from destructive floods. IRN has supported Ali
 Askouri's work since 2004.\n\n\n\n.\n\n\n
