DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered why it seems we always are at war? Filmmaker Eugene
Jarecki certainly did, and set out to explore the preoccupation with the
military in this country. The result was "Why We Fight," which the film's
page on the Sony Pictures Classics web site calls "...an unflinching look
at the anatomy of the American war machine." On Thursday, March 22, Peace
Action of San Mateo County and the Unitarian Universalists of San Mateo
Social Action Committee will present a free screening of "Why We Fight,"
7:30 PM in Beck Hall of the UUSM, 300 E. Santa Inez Ave. in San Mateo. A
brief discussion will follow.\n\n"Why We Fight" won the Grand Jury Prize at
the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. It begins with President Dwight Eisenhower
giving his famous farewell speech warning of the "military/industrial
complex," and includes well-known voices from throughout the political
spectrum giving a variety of takes on the purpose of the military, its
budget, and its human and hardware components. The film's imagery carries
its message home with impact. It is 98 minutes, and is rated
PG-13.\n\nPlease join us for this important film, complete with free
popcorn. This event is wheelchair accessible.\n
