DESCRIPTION:"Copyright vs. Community in the Age of Computer Networks"\nRichard
Stallman\nFounder of the GNU Project\n\n9 PM, Thursday, February
22nd\nHillegass-Parker Coop (formerly Le Chateau)\n2545 Hillegass
Ave.\nBerkeley, CA 94704\n\nAbstract:\nCopyright developed in the age of
the printing press, and was designed\nto fit with the system of centralized
copying imposed by theprinting\npress. But the copyright system does not
fit well with computer\nnetworks, and only draconian punishments can
enforce it.\n\nThe global corporations that profit from copyright are
lobbying for\ndraconian punishments, and to increase their copyright
powers, while\nsuppressing public access to technology. But if we seriously
hope to\nserve the only legitimate purpose of copyright--to promote
progress, for\nthe benefit of the public--then we must make changes in the
other direction.\n\nBiography:\nRichard Stallman launched the development
of the GNU operating system\n(see www.gnu.org) in 1984. GNU is free
software: everyone has the\nfreedom to copy it and redistribute it, as well
as to make changes\neither large or small. The GNU/Linux system, basically
the GNU operating\nsystem with Linux added, is used on tens of millions of
computers today.\nStallman has received the ACM Grace Hopper Award, a
MacArthur Foundation\nfellowship, the Electronic Frontier Foundation's
Pioneer award, and the\nthe Takeda Award for Social/Economic Betterment, as
 well as several\nhonorary doctorates.\n\n________________________\n
