DESCRIPTION: Sacramento City College Cultural Affairs Department is hosting a lecture
by former US Army Chaplain James Yee. This lecture series is honoring Dr.
Martin Luther King.\n\n Thursday, January 25th in the Student Center
building \n(near the cafeteria) \n\n Sacramento City
College\n 3835 Freeport Blvd. (near Sutterville
Blvd)\n (Sac City College Light Rail Station)\n
                                         \n\n James Yee will speak
briefly at noon during a ceremony honoring Dr. Martin Luther King. The
President or V.P. of Sacramento City College will speak about Dr. King's
legacy of civil rights advocacy - other speakers will lecture also.\n\n
At 3:00 pm and 7:00 pm, Yee will give a much longer, detailed lecture
describing his experiences at Guantanamo Prison and his illegal
incarceration which violated his right to Habeus Corpus and his 1st, 6th,
 7th and 8th Ammendment rights.\n\n A third-generation Chinese-American,
his entire family has a record of American exemplary military service
dating back to WWI. Yee was a stellar West Point graduate with a
distinguished career as a military officer. \n\n Yee was initially
assigned to Guantanamo Prison to serve as Muslim Chaplain to the
prisioners. Because he provided spiritual counseling to Muslim inmates and
protested torture and human rights violations at Guantanamo, after less
than one year serving there, he was illegally incarcerated in 2002 as an
"enemy combatant" at top-secret Naval prison in Charleston, South
Carolina. This prison is where all Americans accused of being "terrorist
sympathizers" are imprisoned for an indefinite period of time, without
charges and denied legal counsel.\n\n Upon his arrest. the military
refused to let Yee's family know his whereabouts. He was denied mail,
visitors and legal represenation. Fortunately, a government employee
leaked the news to the media, which gained national outrage. \n\n Yee
was accused of espionage by the military and threatened with the death
penalty. He spent 76 days in solitary confinement and was subject to
abusive torture treatment. \n\n In 2004, the government dropped all
charges against him due to complete lack of credible evidence against Yee.
He never received an apology from the government and resigned in disgust,
due to his military career destroyed in ruins and his faith in American
democracy being shattered. In October 2005, Yee wrote the book “For God
and Country: Faith and Patriotism Under
 Fire.”\n**************************\n\n\nFor details about Sacramento
