 of the Isthmus\nZapotecs of southern Oaxaca, Mexico. The Isthmus\nZapotecs, 
 whose culture is rooted in a strong work\nethic and fierce independent 
 streak, have resulted not\nonly in powerful women, but also in the 
 region's\nprogressive politics and an unusual tolerance of\nalternative 
 gender roles. Artists like Miguel\nCovarrubias and Frida Kahlo have often 
 celebrated and\nrendered tribute in their paintings to the 
 legendary\nbeauty of the woman of Juchitan. These brightly\ncolored, 
 opinionated women run their own businesses,\nembroider their signature of 
 fiery flowers on clothing\nand comment with angry humor on articles in 
 the\nforeign press that flippantly an inaccurately depict\nthem as a 
 promiscuous matriarchy. Their lives may be\nhard, and maintaining Zapotec 
 culture and language may\nbe an ongoing battle, but it is plain that not 
 one of\nthese individuals--man, woman, young, old, gay or\nstraight--would 
 willingly change places with anyone in\nthe first world.\n\n
