DESCRIPTION:Dear Friends of Mumia Abu-Jamal and Lynne Stewart,\n\nGreetings and Best
Wishes for Peace and Justice in 2007!\n\nThis Saturday, January 6 at
10:30am there will be an important meeting of\nthe Mobilization to Free
Mumia Abu-Jamal and the Lynne Stewart Defense\nCommittee at our offices at
298 Valencia Street, at 14th Street in San\nFrancisco's Mission District
(415-255-1085). We will be discussing the\nlatest developments in Mumia's
case, and the historic Bay Area tour of\nLynne Stewart and Michael Ratner
on February 23, 24 and 25th. Lynne,\naccompanied by her husband Ralph
Poynter, will stay on several more days\nfor additional meetings through
March 1.\n\nSaturday's meeting will be a joint planning meeting of the tour
co-sponsors\nand friends including:\n\nThe Lynne Stewart Defense
Committee\nThe Mobilization to Free Mumia Abu-Jamal\nThe National Lawyers
Guild, Bay Are Chapter\nThe Middle East Children's Alliance\nThe Peninsula
Peace and Justice Center\nKPFA\n\nEveryone is welcome!\n\nBy agreement with
Lynne and Michael, the tour proceeds are to be divided by\nthe Lynne
Stewart Defense Committee and the Mobilization to Free Mumia\nAbu-Jamal.
The basic themes of the tour will be defense of civil liberties\nand
democratic rights.\n\nMore info below...\n\nPlease attend this important
 meeting this Saturday!\n\nFREE MUMIA!!\nIn solidarity,\n\nJeff Mackler and
Laura Herrera\nCo-coordinators of The Mobilization to Free Mumia
Abu-Jamal\n298 Valencia Street, San Francisco, CA
94103\n415-255-1085\n\n\n\n* Michael is the President of the Center for
Constitutional Rights and\namong the leading U.S. figures in the fight for
fundamental constitutional\nrights for those illegally detained and
tortured by U.S. authorities in\nGuantanamo Bay, Cuba. Ratner has also been
involved in filing war crimes\ncharges in a German court against several
figures in the Bush\nAdministration.\n\n* Lynne Stewart is in the process
of preparing her appeal to the U.S. Court\nof Appeals for the Second
Circuit. She was falsely convicted of conspiracy\nto aide and abet
terrorism in a trial replete with constitutional\nviolations including the
government's use of some 80,000 wiretaps, phone\ntaps and other
infringements on the attorney client privilege. Lynne's\nappeal and her
similarly framed co-defendants Ahmed Sattar and Mohammed\nYousry, will be
combined with a defense against government efforts to\nreverse and
lengthen the two-year jail sentence jail imposed by District\nCourt Judge
John Koeltl. The government originally asked for a 30-year\nsentence and
is insisting that it be imposed.\n\n* In addition to Lynne and Michael,
Jeff Mackler, a national coordinator of\nthe defense of Mumia Abu-Jamal
will speak on the final stages in the fight\nfor Mumia's life and freedom.
Oral arguments to the U.S. Court of Appeals\nfor the Third Circuit are
expected to be presented in Mumia's case in the\ncoming months. The
government continues to seek a re-imposition of the\ndeath penalty, while
Mumia fights for a new trial and freedom.\n\n* To date the tour includes
mass meetings in Palo Alto, Berkeley, San\nFrancisco and Marin. We need
your help to schedule additional meetings at\ncolleges and universities,
law schools, legal organizations, new\ncommunities, etc. We need dedicated
activists to help with media work,\npublicity, outreach and all the other
ingredients that make for a\nsuccessful tour in terms of political gains,
new support for Lynne, Mumia\nand Michael and serious fundraising. Lynne's
last visit raised in excess\nof $15,000. We expect to significantly top
this figure with the present\ntour. Your participation is essential. Your
attendance is required for the\nkind of effort that is vital to the
 breakthrough victories we seek.\n
