DESCRIPTION:The Police Commission is voting next Wednesday, December 6, about whether
to approve surveillance cameras at 16th and Mission Streets.\n\nThe City
says the cameras are going up because people who live, work, and walk in
San Francisco, want them.\n\nPlease come to one or both of the following
meetings to voice your opposition to the cameras.\n\nMission Neighborhood
Community Meeting – Monday, December 4 at 6 p.m. at Marshall Elementary
 School cafeteria (1575 15th Street, 15th and Capp). \n \nPolice Commission
Meeting- Wednesday, December 6 at 5:30 p.m. at San Francisco City Hall,
Room 400, San Francisco, California. \n\nWe all want safe communities, but
video cameras are just not the solution. The expanded video surveillance
program should be rejected because:\n\n It is ineffective in reducing
crime. Study after study demonstrates that video surveillance cameras do
not reduce crime or the fear of crime in the long-run. Crime just moves
from one corner to another.\n\n It threatens privacy and free speech
rights, allowing the government to track what you are doing and where you
are going.\n\n It is expensive. The funds proposed for the surveillance
cameras could be better spent on more effective crime-reduction measures
such as increased foot patrols, community policing, or better
lighting.\n\n\nPlease forward this information to others about the meetings
and also send an email to the Police Commission at
sfpd.commission@sfgov.org and let them know you don't want cameras.\n\n\n
