DESCRIPTION:...with the Police Practices Policy Director, Mark Schlosberg. Federal,
state and local agencies have infiltrated or monitored the political
activity of Californians throughout Central and Northern California in what
has become a disturbing trend, according to an ACLU-NC report released in
July.\n\nFrom the stories of grandmothers opposing the war in Iraq to
anti-war protestors at the Port of Oakland, “The State of Surveillance:
Government Monitoring of Political Activity in Northern and Central
California" tells the compelling stories of individuals and groups that
were targets of government surveillance because of their political
activity.\n\nMark Schlosberg has served for the last five years as Police
Practices Policy Director for the ACLU of Northern California. In this
capacity, he has worked on a variety of policing issues including racial
profiling, accountability systems, surveillance, crowd management, and use
of force. He was on the legal team that reached a landmark racial profiling
settlement agreement with the California Highway Patrol, managed the
successful 2003 ballot campaign to strengthen the San Francisco oversight
system, and has authored several reports on policing issues, most recently
The State of Surveillance: Government Monitoring of Political Activity in
Northern and Central California.\n\nPrior to working at the ACLU of
Northern California, Schlosberg worked as a deputy public defender at the
Contra Costa Public Defender Office and was Vice Chair of the Berkeley
Police Review Commission. Schlosberg received his law degree from New York
University School of Law.\n\nThere will be time for questions and
discussion with the audience after Mr. Schlosberg’s talk.\n\nOther info
