 this year were the\nlargest protests on any issue in the history of the 
 U.S.  Today\nimmigrant sweeps and deportations are continuing while 
 anti-immigrant\nlegislation continues to move through congress.  How is 
 race coloring\nthe national debate on immigration?  How can we build 
 stronger\ncross-racial and cross-class alliances among communities of 
 color?  In\nthis election year, how can we not be pit against each other, 
 but see\nour common ground?  How and why especially should faith 
 communities be\ninvolved in this struggle for full human rights, 
 citizenship, dignity\nand participation?   \n\n \nBill Ong Hing is 
 professor of law and Asian American studies at the\nUniversity of 
 California at Davis and the author of Defining America\nthrough Immigration 
 Policy.  For 3 decades he has worked extensively in\nthe field including 
 founding and directing the Immigrant Legal Resource\nCenter, as well as 
 working with Congress & the U.S. Department of\nJustice.  Defining America
