DESCRIPTION:Social Landscape Beach Cleanup project with \nSan Francisco artist Banker
White\n\nEvent co-sponsored by SF Recycling & Disposal Artist in Residence
Program \nand the San Francisco Arts Commission.\nRecycling services
provided by Norcal Waste Systems.\n\nJoin SF Recycling & Disposal
artist-in-residence alumni Banker White in a public collaborative arts
project in San Francisco. Please come and help clean up Ocean Beach while
participating in a community building art project. \n\nPotluck picnic
reception at the north end of the beach at Kelly’s Cove around
 sunset.\n\nSunday, November 5, 2006 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. \n\nCheck in at
two locations: Sloat Blvd parking lot at the south end of Ocean Beach, and
Kelly's Cove parking lot at the north end of Ocean Beach. (Detailed
directions below.)\n\nSocial Landscape’s Beach Cleanup project needs
volunteers to help collect colored plastics that are mixed with the seaweed
at the high-tide water mark of Ocean Beach. Volunteers will assist Banker
White and crew by removing glass and waste materials other people have left
behind while seeing, experiencing and respecting this beautiful beach and
ocean. When the material is collected it will be sorted by color and value
at the north end of the beach.\n\nFrom sunrise to sunset, film and video
cameras will capture the entire spectacle in time-lapse animation from the
cliffs above. Additionally, the event will be documented by still
photographers and videographers who will focus on a more documentary style
coverage of the event. They will document public participation, reactions
to the event, while capturing this social exploration of our relationship
as individuals to the environment, to our community, and to our
world.\n\nThe resulting films will document an active, collaborative
creative process taking place along side the passing traffic, the movement
of the tides, and the rising and setting of the sun. \n\nBanker White has
been walking and collecting trash from Ocean beach for the last two years.
He has found that two people, working for two hours, were able to gather a
full spectrum of colored plastics, paper, metal, and glass materials that
covered a 10' x 7' area!\n\nThe event itself is meant to engage the public,
while the documentation of the work is meant to inspire people to conserve
natural resources and recycle more. \n\nSocial Landscape is interested in
many varied levels of commitment, from\nthe un-expected public audience to
community members involved in the beach\nclean up, to core team members who
were involved with pre-planning and\nactively executing the final outcomes.
Please contact us or just show up!\n\n\nHow to participate?\nJust show up.
You are welcome to show up by yourself or with your group. Please come down
and spend an hour or two or all day collecting trash. There will be
greeting stations at the Sloat Blvd parking lot at the south end of Ocean
Beach, and at the Kelly's Cove parking lot at the north end of Ocean Beach.
You can pick up gloves and bags at these stations and leave your bags of
garbage there when you leave. There is plenty of free parking in both
parking lots.\n \nARTIST VOLUNTEERS\nIf you are interested in becoming more
involved with the art animation side of this project please contact us by
 email: info@sociallandscape.org\n\nWhen?\nSunday November 5th.\nGreeting
Stations will be attended from 9 AM to 3 PM, but feel free to come join in
all day. There will be project participants at Ocean Beach from sunrise to
sundown. There will also be a potluck picnic reception at the North end
of the beach at Kelly’s cove around sunset. A short walk from there up
to the cliff house you can get an incredible view of the beach and of our
 sorting animation.\n\nWhat to pick up:\n• Trash & Recyclables\nTrash is
any human-created, foreign matter (plastics, metal, glass, Styrofoam,
etc.). Remember to pick up even small pieces of trash, which animals often
mistake for food. These items go into your trash bag. Recyclable materials
will be pulled out and recycled at the end of the day. Norcal Waste
Services is providing a debris box and will be taking the material to be
recycled. \n\nWhat NOT to pick up:\n• Dangerous items\nDo not touch
syringes, needles, any sharp objects, condoms, tampons, waste materials,
weapons, heavy items, or anything of which you are not sure. Mark the area
with a ring of sticks or stones and notify the person at the greeting
station. When in doubt, don't touch it.\n• Natural items\nNatural items
(such as algae, kelp, driftwood, shells, etc.) are part of the ecosystem
that we are working to restore and should be left alone. Please avoid
disturbing plants, animals and fragile dune areas. .\n\nWhen you're
finished:\nReturn trash, recyclables to the greeting station to be
sorted.\nTry to condense the bags and tie them closed. Please feel free to
walk and enjoy the beach, and come visit the sorting animation at the
North end of the beach. \n\nDon’t be shy, ask questions, start up a
conversation, and come join in and help. And remember, there will be a
potluck picnic reception at the North end of the beach at Kelly’s Cove
around sunset. A short walk from there up to the cliff house you can get
an incredible view of the beach and our sorting animation.\n\n
