DESCRIPTION:**************************************************\nThe Depts. of Community
Studies and Film & Digital Media
 Present:\n**************************************************\nTHE LEGACY OF
CINE MANIFEST\na screening and talk with the director:\nJUDY
 IROLA\n\nSCREENING:\nTues October 10 @ 7 pm\nCommunications Studio
 C\n\nCOLLOQUIUM\nWed October 11 @ 12:30-2pm\nCollege Eight Room
 301\nUCSC\n**************************************************\n\nCome hear
about the time when “indie” filmmaking meant committed,\nprogressive,
regional movies about ordinary people -- not two-picture\ndeals in
Hollywood. You’ve all heard about the 70s in U.S. filmmaking,\nthe time
of Lucas and Spielberg and all the other guys of that golden\ntime, making
movies and breaking down the walls of the studios.\n\nNow, hear the other
side -- from Cine Manifest , a documentary intent\non telling all the
truths about a radical moment in history that\ntried to change society as
much as movies. This is an amazing opportunity to\nmeet Judy Irola, a
central figure in the utopian Cine Manifest film\ncollective. Irola is now
a renowned cinematographer and Professor of\nCinematography at the
University of Southern California.\n\nCine Manifest is having its world
premiere at the Mill Valley Film\nFestival and comes to UC Santa Cruz
straight from that engagement.\nIrola was the only woman member of this
collective. Now, in a very\ndifferent day and age, she has tracked down the
other members and\nsought to understand their long-ago
experiment.\n\nSPEAKER BIO:\nJudy Irola, ASC, is Conrad Hall Chair in
Cinematography, USC\nSchool of Cinema-Television. Head of the
Cinematography track,\nIrola has shot 14 feature films and many
documentaries. Her films\ninclude GOLD CUP (digital), EBAN AND CHARLEY
(digital), EAT\nYOUR HEART OUT, AN AMBUSH OF GHOSTS—winner
 Sundance\nFestival Cinematography Award; NORTHERN LIGHTS—winner,\nCamera
D’or, Cannes Film Festival, and THE SETTLEMENT.\nDirector of Photography
for the NBC series LIFESTORIES. Filmed\ndocumentaries in Brazil, Jamaica,
Cuba, France, Poland,\nMozambique, Kenya, the Soviet Union and throughout
the U.S. Her\nawards include a Kodak Vision Award, Locarno and Venice
 Film\nFestivals.\n
