DESCRIPTION:"DECLARE PEACE!"\n\nCampout with "ANNIE AND THE VETS" in Downtown San
Francisco!\n\nJoin Annie and the Vets, the Raging Grannies, antiwar
veterans, and activists in camping for peace during the Declaration of
Peace week of action, Sept 21-28. This will be a one-night urban campout in
support of the Declaration of Peace congressional pledge, which calls upon
Congress to take meaningful steps to end the war (more info at
www.declarationofpeace.org.) Annie and the Vets will be playing at 7:30, so
come early so you don't miss the show! After the performance Ralph Stein
will give a video presentation of the Sat, Sept 23 civil disobedience at
Indian Island nuclear submarine base in support of Iraq war resister Lt
Watada. We will then be carried into the night by song from the Raging
Grannies, reverie, and merriment.\n\nIn the spirit of the Vietnam Veterans
Against the War Dewey Canyon III camp at the foot of the Capitol Building
in 1971, we encourage anyone who has military tents, sleeping bags, or
other equipment to bring it to help add to the military veteran feel of the
camp. However please leave any weapons at home as we do not want police,
etc to construe our event as dangerous. Feel free to wear military jackets,
camo, etc, and of course your signs, flags, etc are most welcome. All
peace-lovers are welcome to come and stay as long as they wish. The
Declaration of Peace week of action will conclude with a Critical Mass bike
ride against the Oil War, starting 5:00 PM Friday evening, 9/29, from
Embarcadero Plaza. (Full calendar of events is below.)\n\nMost people will
go home to sleep in their own beds, but some will stay to enjoy a night on
the plaza camping for peace. We are unsure whether the police will ask us
to leave at any point. There is no civil disobedience planned for this
event, and if the police ask us to leave, we will comply only insofar as it
is necessary to avoid arrest. (i.e. We may be told that we are not allowed
to actually sleep on the plaza, so we will get a few rounds of coffee and
stay awake.) Others are of course free to do what they are called to do at
their own risk.\n\nThis event is to encourage our elected officials to act
with the moral authority bestowed upon them by the antiwar majority of the
country and get our troops out of Iraq immediately. Our demands are that
Congress enact legislation now that upholds the eight points of the
Declaration of Peace.\n\n'What was it all for,' we keep on asking. They
pinned metals upon us which my friends and I wanted to lock away from
sight. We were told we were the best, that we were heroes, but no one could
tell us why...\n~Iraq War Veteran Joshua Casteel, Conscientious
Objector\n\n**For questions please contact Lacy MacAuley at (703) 850-5542
