 of cities\nand public life, free from the noise, stress and\npollution of 
 cars. Each year on September 22, people\naround the world organize events 
 of all sizes to\nshowcase alternatives to the automobile.\n\nThe goal of 
 World Carfree Day is to call attention to\nthe damage done by society's 
 love affair with the\nautomobile. Cars have changed the way we live and 
 have\nchanged the environment we live in. In many European\ncities, one 
 fourth of the city's surface area is given\nover to the automobile in the 
 form of streets or\nparking lots. In a place like Los Angeles, it is 
 two\nthirds. Meanwhile, parks and playgrounds are becoming\na 
 scarcity.\n\nWorld Carfree Day is a celebration of cities and towns\nas 
 human space, as places for people to live. In those\ncities where a street 
 is closed, people can - if only\nfor a day - experience how peaceful their 
 city can be\nif there is no thundering of motors, no honking of\nhorns, and 
 no boxes of steel blocking the way. \n\nHow to participate:  Friday, 
 September 22nd\n\n-Don’t drive or ride in a car\n- Walk, bike, 
 skateboard, or take public transportation!\n- Tell a friend\n- Join fellow 
 Santa Cruzers for a Community "Green\nCities" Bike Parade! Wear/decorate 
 your bike in Green!\ngather 5:30 Town Clock Tower Ride
