DESCRIPTION:Why Critical Mass? Car Culture, Oil, and Environmental Injustice:
\n\nCritical Mass is a celebration of bike culture, a meaningful
alternative to car culture and greenhouse gas generating fossil fuels.
\n\nA strong scientific consensus agrees that the 2005 hurricane season was
fueled by global warming -- and the crimes of the oil industry in the Gulf
go beyond global warming. \n\nAugust 25th marks the day Katrina reached
hurricane strength and slammed into the coast of Florida. It's also the
last Friday of the month, widely observed by Critical Mass rides around the
country. \n\nThe goal of this ride is to take to the streets with a
reminder that the racist tragedy in the Gulf continues, a demand that it
never be repeated, and to raise awareness about the role of the oil
industry and global warming in environmental injustice. \n\nWe'll also be
fundraising at rides around the continent for advocacy and relief groups in
New Orleans. \n\nAt least 27 cities joining the ride! \n\nJoin us in
demanding Climate Justice on August 25th: \n\nRead more details about the
event. \nGet involved - find out about rides in your area, start a ride,
help spread the word. \nRead about other Katrina Anniversary events.

major issue of concern is the nexus between climate change and the
widespread prevalence of poverty in the world. The impacts of climate
change will fall disproportionately upon developing countries and the poor
persons within all countries, thereby exacerbating inequities in health
status and access to adequate food, clean water and other resources." \n\n-
