DESCRIPTION:Rebellion and Repression in Mexico – A Benefit Screening for Project
TUPA\n\nOn Sunday, August 27th Project TUPA will present a screening
of:\n\nGranito de Arena (Grain of Sand)\n\nFor over 20 years, global
economic forces have been dismantling public education in Mexico, but
always in the constant shadow of popular resistance…\n\nGranito de Arena
is the story of that resistance – the story of hundreds of thousands of
public school teachers whose grassroots, non violent movement took Mexico
by surprise, and who have endured brutal repression in their 25 year
struggle for social and economic justice in Mexico’s public
schools.\n\nAtenco: Breaking the Siege\n\nThis video analyzes the events in
San Salvador Atenco during the first days of may 2006 and denounces the
violation of the civilian population’s human rights by state and federal
police forces. The documentary deconstructs the mass media’s operating
methods, which were responsible for creating a climate of fear and an
information blockade on the events in San Salvador Atenco.\n\nThe screening
will be held at the Humanist Hall, 390 27th Street in Oakland, California
starting at 6:30 p.m. with a sliding scale admission of
$10-$20.\n\nProceeds benefit Project TUPA, a project of Free Radio
Berkeley. Project TUPA (Transmitters Uniting the Peoples of the Americas)
is working with indigenous, barrio and campesino communities in Mexico,
Central and South America to create and maintain community broadcast
stations. All funds from this event will be used to supply materials and
equipment for a series of transmitter building and station construction
workshops to be held in Mexico during September, 2006.\n\nFor further
information, please contact Project TUPA. \n(510)
