DESCRIPTION:RIGHTS ON THE LINE: VIGILANTES ON THE BORDER\nFriday, July 28, 2006,
 7:30\nQuaker Meeting House\n 225 Rooney St, Santa Cruz, 95060\n\n"Rights
on the Line: Vigilantes at the Border" \nexposes the ugly anti-immigrant
politics that \nlurk behind the Minuteman Project - and shows the
\ncontinuum between official border militarization \nand vigilante action.
This video was shot by \nhuman rights activists and residents of border
\ncommunities. It tells the story of border \ntensions from the point of
view of those affected \nand reveals the underlying motivations of the
\nvigilantes through interviews and disturbing \nfootage of their nighttime
patrols.\n\nFor more than a decade, the southern border of \nthe U.S. has
resembled a war zone. Aggressive, \nmilitary-style actions by the Border
Patrol have \nmade human rights abuses everyday events in \nborder
communities. Alongside this official \nmilitarization, armed vigilante
groups have \nharassed border crossers and communities, but \ntheir numbers
were relatively limited until \nrecently. In April 2005, a new group called
the \n“Minuteman Project" became a national media \ndarling when several
hundred recruits gathered in \nArizona to patrol the border. Only months
later, \nthey are expanding their activities into \nCalifornia, Texas and
several other states \nthroughout the country.\n\nLeaders of the Minuteman
Project have been very \nskillful at portraying themselves as no more than
\na well-meaning "neighborhood watch group." They \nhave been featured on
many major television and \nradio programs and have been welcomed by the
\ngovernor of California. Their racism and \nxenophobia are rarely
explored, nor their \nlegality publicly challenged. In the coming \nmonths,
it is essential that opposing voices be \nheard and actions taken to
counteract their \ngrowing influence.\n\nProduced by American Friends
Service Committee / ACLU / WITNESS.\n\n\nFor more information, contact the

Nonviolence\nCo-sponsors: La Liga de la Comunidad, ACLU Santa \nCruz Co.,
