DESCRIPTION:T: ALL ABOUT IT!\nDate/Time: Sunday, July 9, 1-4 pm\nA workshop about
 testosterone\nAt the Center for Sex & Culture, 398 11th St., SF. $10-30
sliding\nscale, no one turned away for lack of funds.\n\nAll About T is a
workshop that provides an overview of the practical\naspects of
testosterone use for female-to-male (FTM) transsexuals.\nThis workshop
covers what every FTM—and anyone considering FTM\ntransition—should
know about testosterone, covering types of T,\nsocial misconceptions of T,
administration methods of testosterone\nadministration, permanent and
non-permanent changes, physical risks,\npotential emotional and
sexual-outlook changes, and more. The\nworkshop is also suitable for
allies, sex educators, and\nprofessionals who want a better understanding
of\nthe hormonal aspects of FTM transition.\n\nWorkshop Background (by the
instructor):\n\nThrough a search for information to guide my own
transition, it came\nto my attention how astonishingly little information
is readily\navailable about testosterone for FTM transitioning.
Equally\nastonishing was how little the majority of transitioned FTMs
know\nabout the use of testosterone—the potential risks,
treatment\noptions, suggested medical monitoring, etc. I also became aware
of\nhow many pre- or non-transitioned people were grappling with
whether\nor not to take testosterone—without the benefit of full
information\nabout the risks and consequences of its use, both from a
medical\nperspective and for the implications for change in their
everyday\nlives. Adding to this situation, medical professionals\nare often
inadequately informed of the proper treatment methods for\nFTM hormonal
transition, and consequently, are frequently of little\nhelp. Even for
those health care providers who are relatively\ninformed, they are usually
too short of time and too ill-equipped to\nprepare their client for the
 physical and practical ramifications of\ntransitioning.\n\nThis
presentation is an attempt to remedy that lack of information\nabout
testosterone use for transitioning.\n\nI have found that too much of the
academic work on transgenderism\nand transsexuality primarily focuses on
theory, which neglects and\nleaves invisible the day-to-day realities of
trans lives. As a\nresult, an additional intention of this workshop is to
offer a\nglimpse into the practicalities of FTM transitioning, for those
who\nare not trans themselves, in the hopes that a deeper
understanding\nwill allow allies to become even better allies. By giving
this\nworkshop, I hope to build a bridge that begins to fill that gap
 of\nunderstanding between theory and praxis.\n\nInstructor Bio:\n\nJohn
Otto is nearing completion of a Masters in Library and\nInformation Science
at the University of Washington. He has a BA\nfrom The Evergreen State
College in multidisciplinary gender/sex\nstudies. He has also taken
additional coursework on transgenderism\nat San Francisco State University,
interned with the Intersex\nSociety of North American, and is active within
the trans\ncommunity. This spring he presented "Addressing\nthe Information
Needs of FTMs" at the first formal world conference\nfor professionals and
anyone involved with GLBT archives, libraries,\nmuseums and special
collections, and collectors of GLBT materials.\n
