DESCRIPTION:The Alameda Public Affairs Forum is pleased to present Professor and Author
Stephen Zunes, speaking on The United States and Iran: Nuclear
Proliferation, Terrorism and Regime Change, at the Home of Truth Center,
 1300 Grand Street, Alameda on Saturday, July 22nd, from 7 to 9 p.m. \n\nDr.
Zunes will be discussing how the United States can best address the dilemma
posed by the Iranian government's nuclear program, its support for
extremist \ngroups and its suppression of human rights. Can the United
States be a credible advocate for democracy and non-proliferation while
continuing to back dictatorships and nuclear weapons states in the region?
What alternatives might there be to doing nothing or going to war.
Professor Stephen Zunes will explore these and other questions as well as
examining the history of U.S.-Iranian relations, the impact of the U.S.
invasion of Iraq, the role of the international community, the concerns of
Israel and the struggle for democracy within Iran \n\nStephen Zunes has
emerged as one of the most forceful and articulate critics of U.S. policy
in the Middle East. He is professor of Politics and former chair of the
Peace & Justice Studies Program at the University of San Francisco and a
senior policy analyst and Middle East editor for the Foreign Policy in
Focus Project. He is the author of Tinderbox: U.S. Middle East Policy and
the Roots of Terrorism (Common Courage Press) and scores of articles
regarding the Persian Gulf, Israel/Palestine, Western Sahara, terrorism and
Islamic movements. Dr. Zunes has made frequent visits to the Middle East,
where he has met with top government officials, academics, journalists and
opposition leaders.\n\nFollowing the presentation there will be time for
discussion and questions from the audience. The program is free but
donations at the door are accepted. \nFor more information see
