DESCRIPTION:Tuesday, October 22, 2002\n\n\nDerrick Jensen is the author of "A Language
Older than Words," "The Culture of Make Believe," and "Listening to the
Land: Conversations about Nature, Culture and Eros." In his books, Jensen
shows clearly that the atrocities perpetrated by western civilization ˜on
humans as well as non-humans˜ are a logical outgrowth of our culture's
dissociation from the natural world, which is also reflected in our lack of
contact with our own innermost hearts. Writing for The New York Times
Magazine, Audubon, and The Sun magazine (among others), Jensen challenges
cultural assumptions that are so ingrained as to be invisible to most of
us. A singular and vitally important philosopher for our times, Jensen
weaves together anecdote, unsettling ecological data, incisive analysis,
and poignant personal reflection. His in-person presentations are
provocative, powerful, often humorous, and profoundly moving. He concludes
with a conversational question-and-answer session. Andrea Prichett,
formerly of the band Rebecca Riots, will provide a musical introduction to
this benefit for the Ecology Center. Time: 7 pm. Cost: $6 - $10 sliding
scale, no one turned away for lack of funds. Info: Beck, 510/548-2220
