DESCRIPTION:Please join co-hosts Assemblyman Mark Leno, Supervisor Bevan Dufty, 
 Supervisor Tom Ammiano, and the San Francisco Lesbian Gay Bisexual 
 Transgender Community Center, for a public fundraiser to recognize the 40th 
 Anniversary of San Francisco’s Compton’s Cafeteria Riot.   In 1966, 
 three years before the famous rioting at New York’s Stonewall Inn, a 
 group of transgender women and gay street-hustlers in the Tenderloin fought 
 back for the first time against everyday police harassment. This act of 
 resistance was a dramatic turning point for the transgender community, and 
 one of the beginnings of a new human rights struggle that continues to this 
 very day.   Cost: $20 sliding-scale donation includes free beer, wine and 
 non-alcoholic drinks, as well as light food.   Donated funds will be used 
 to support the June 22 installation of a historical marker at the original 
 riot site, and provide completion funds for the Emmy-Award winning movie 
 Screaming Queens, which recovered this story for today’s audiences. 
 Compton’s Cafeteria Riot 40th Anniversary Commemoration is a fiscal 
 project of the San Francisco Pride Committee, a registered 501(c)3 
 nonprofit.   Wine and beer is being provided by Young’s Market Company 
 and The Deco Lounge. Light food is provided by Project Open Hand.
