DESCRIPTION:DEFEND PEOPLE'S PARK THIS SATURDAY, MAY 13, AT NOON !!! Dear
everybody, Once again People's Park is having
a serious conflict between those who would defend it as place that poor
people and activists can assembly and provide mutual aid and the University
of California and its police force. Over the last 2 years we have lost our
Free Box first to UC frat boy twice. Since last fall we have rebuilt this
box several times often at great expense only to have the University tear
it down again. We waited sufficiently long to allow the UC police to go
after the drug dealing in the park by which they have justified attacking
our basic civil and human rights & the false claiming of the sidewalk as UC
property to prevent sleeping there giving no 647j warnings any more, have
strictly use a series of People's Park rules we have repeatedly challenged
at the People's Park Advisory Board which was discontinued for 6 months
when we did seizing people's possessions and preventing activists from
bringing stuff into the park. Now they have set up barricades to further
prevent access. Now they are threatening to cite anyone who brings and
leaves clothes and/or food in the park. On Sunday April 23rd
Disabled People Outside Project activist Dan McMullan was coming into the
park for a meeting to deal with these issues. Being in a wheelchair he
asked his little boys to move the barricades so he could get access into
the park. Being the rambunctious boys they are they kicked them down. UC
officer Sean Aranas accused him of destroying UC property and put his hand
on Danny's shoulder. Danny called loudly "Don't touch me!" in part to alert
us fellow activists he was been messed with. Sean reportedly said he can
touch whoever he wants and puts his hand firmly on Danny again. Soon Sean
and another UC officer were pushing/yanking Danny out of his wheelchair
down to the ground where 6 UC police officers got on top of him including
one who repeatedly bet Danny in the stomach. Later despite Danny and my
telling UC officer O'Connor that Danny is disabled with a false leg
O'Connor insisted DAnny lean over the back of the squad car which we told
him would hurt Danny. Because Danny needed to go to the hospital due to
internal stomach bleeding from the beating he wasn't sent to jail. They
want to charge him with trespassing(for knocking over the barricades), for
resisting arrest. There are many witnesses that saw the incident and have
verified what I have reported here. WE have called a
protest this Saturday May 13th at high noon in People's PaRK(1/2 Block east
of Telegraph between Haste & Dwight) asking people to bring clothes and
food to People's Park. Saturday use to be when churches brought food to the
park but lately they are not doing so. Michael Delacouer has gotten a sound
permit to speak on Haste St. near the park. Andrea Pritchard of Copwatch
agreed to speak. We are hearing the University plans to
counter our protest with force. Please help us reclaim People's Park
from the University that is no friend of the People.\n
