On August 6th and 9th, the 61st anniversaries of the U.S. atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, people all over the world demanded an end to the war in Iraq, no military attacks on Iran or North Korea, and a path toward the global abolition of nuclear weapons, starting at home.

Thousands of people gathered across the US during the week of July 4th to protest the on-going war in Iraq. Code Pink also launched a nationwide fast to demand an end to the war. Fasters plan to stay in front of the White House every day until August 14th, when they will move the hunger strike next to President Bush's vacation ranch in Crawford, Texas. Fasters protested in front of Dianne Feinstein's SF office daily for a week. A Troops Home Fast Press Conference will be held in Oakland on Monday, July 17th at 12:00pm, as local fasters will be starting their continuous presence at the Federal Building. U.S.-supplied F-16 fighter-bombers have destroyed the main power station in Gaza and destroyed bridges on the only major roads linking the northern and southern sections of the region. Round-the-clock Israeli artillery shelling is taking place. Most of the people of Gaza are now without water and electricity. Israel has also arrested a third of the members of the Palestinian Authority governing body.

On Tuesday, June 20th more than 150 people people joined MECA, ADC-SF and QUIT! in downtown Berkeley for an emergency action to say "NO!" to killing children by violence and deprivation. In dozens of cities in North America, June 20th was a Day of Action in solidarity with the Palestinian people. The Israeli military has fired over 7,000 shells on the people of Gaza so far this year. The death toll for American soldiers in Iraq now stands at 2500. Vigils are planned in Fresno, Santa Cruz, Sacramento and other cities in California. The number of Iraqis who have died as a result of the US occupation is unknown but a study done over a year and a half ago by the British medical journal The Lancet estimated the number of civilian casualties at 100,000.

Having been the target of numerous recent anti-war demonstrations, the Oakland Military Recruitment Center on Broadway at 21st Street met a different type of adversary on June 7th. The Clandestine Insurgent Rebel Clown Army (CIRCA) invaded and occupied the military recruitment center in downtown Oakland for about 45 minutes until they were forced out by city police and the center shut down for the day.

Major Mischief reports: We went to see if us clowns could fly big planes and drive big cars too, but the army people were too serious and tried to kick us out. Once we played some games and explained consensus to them, they were a little happier with us. We decided their army was boring and set up our own recruiting table for the "Army of Fun" outside while the rest of us tried to get them to laugh.
